A rapidly growing warm-season bunchgrass. An annual plant that is a native of East Africa. Low winter temperatures prevent regrowth. Often used as a temporary cover for erosion control. Can also be used as a nurse crop when seeding switchgrass. Has a drooping leaf characteristic that gives it the "weeping" name. Seedheads can reach a height of 30 to 40 inches. Seed at the rate of 3 to 5 pounds per acre in pure stands or 1 to 2 pounds per acre in mixtures with other species. Seed at a depth of 1/4 inch. The seed is extremely fine, so a seeder with a small seed attachment is best for seeding. Seed in the early summer after the threat of frost has passed and when the soil temperature is above 65 degrees F.
