Udder is a medium - late maturing orchardgrass being 3 days earlier than Pennlate. Maturity is similar to Haymate, Orion and Condor. Udder was bred for forage yield and disease resistance, in addition to palatability. Udder has good resistance toward leaf spot and powdery mildew. Udder is adapted to a broad geographic range, from the mid-west to the eastern seaboard and has been trialed in experiment stations in Wisconsin, Kentucky, and Pennsylvania.
In its area of adaption, seedlings are competitive enough to withstand competition from weeds and weedy grasses while establishing. Once established, it will survive many years under a grass/hay management regime, it also has excellent regrowth on second or third cuttings each season.
Udder is suited for pasture, hay, green chop, and silage and under proper management it has excellent regrowth potential. The late maturity facilitates its use in hay combinations with alfalfa and red clover. Udder can be used alone or in conjunction with adapted legumes.
